HYBRID TOOL TRACK.  6.21.06

Alright... Tool: 1, CuttingWithWater: 0.

Some of you may recall my somewhat ruthless bashing of Tool's newest release, 10,000 Days. Well, I still stand by those statements, but something was brought to my attention recently that is sure to inject a little more credibility into that album, and since I wasn't smart enough to figure it out myself, I owe Tool a bit of an apology. Just a small one though, since the album still isn't doing it for me.

Turns out that the six minute-long track "Wings For Marie", and the last six minutes of the next track, "10,000 Days", are complementary halves. If you play the two on top of eachother, you get an intricate orchestra of sound. For those of you who are not musically inclined, I'd like to point out that having two diffferent songs sync up with eachother is not easy to do, and nearly impossible to do by accident.

First of all, the drum patterns obviously have to match or complement eachother. Then, the melodies, and the key of the song, have to be in tune. Lastly, any lyrics must also be complementary, to avoid muddying up the works. Add to all this the fact that Tool songs are usually quite intricate on their own, and you have a tall order indeed.

Tool's "hybrid" track satisfies all those requirements, and so contrary to what some of the chatroom vermin have said, I do indeed declare this legitimate. Because really, for this to occur by accident would be the most improbable thing to happen in a long time. Of course, at the end of it all, the lyrics are sung in unison on both tracks, so that pretty much proves it anyway.

Listen to the first two files here (30 second excerpts) to get an idea of the individual songs before they're combined. The third track is the complete hybrid track, which I've been kind enough to chop up and glue together for you; at the 16 second mark, the second song begins to play. As you listen, remember: this is two songs playing at the same time. If it seems a bit uneventful to you, and sounds like any other song, realize that that's precisely the feat being achieved here. Pretty cool.
